Torquay Holiday 2007

Saturday: Siran is home from work nice and early, so we start our travels at 5.00pm. No holdups so we reach our hotel in Milton Keynes around 7.30pm. Then we go on a Kebab hunt and find a trailer selling kebabs almost immediately. The meat had a colour suggesting a meat content of around 2%. The vendor said we could have any sauce as long as it was chilli but later admitted having others including garlic sauce which we chose. The whole thing was very tasty and we were still alive the next morning.

Sunday: We drive 2˝ hours to Bath and spend a pleasant 3 hours taking in the lively atmosphere in the warm sunshine and drinking coffee. Then another 2˝ hour drive to our hotel in Torquay. A pleasant swim in the heated outdoor pool was followed by a lovely dinner. Later on we go for a walk to take in the evening atmosphere and find the train times.

Monday: Early morning (Well 8.00am) followed by breakfast. Then we catch the ferry to Brixham where we spend 1˝ hours exploring before relaxing in the (now hot) sunshine. Then we catch the ferry back to Torquay. In the afternoon we explore Torquay town centre. We walk up Union Street as far as the town of Torre before returning. Then time for a swim before a lovely evening meal. Later we watch the evening film which is the lastest James Bond film 'Casino Royale'.

Tuesday: Following a forecast of wind & rain we decided to visit the Eden Project because the domes were covered. When we arrived the weather was good enough to spend time round the outside gardens before going round the biomes. There were a few new things to see but the best is still the original: Tropical trees and plants from around the world and the Mediteranian climate plantations. On our return to the hotel we get a swim in the outdoor pool, have a lovely meal then watch the latest James Bond film: Casino Royale.

Wednesday: Early swim, breakfast, then off to Dartmouth. The car ferry across the River Dart was an experience. Dartmouth itself is quaint with narrow cobbled streets, a harbour with stunning views across the River Dart and a lovely park. Even better, there was a very nice bakery. Afterwards we drove to Plymouth. The Tomtom satnav decided to take us on the steepest and narrowest roads that it could find ... but we got there. We spent a couple of hours in Plymouth city centre but because of limited time we didn't get to walk to the Hoe. In the evening we went for a walk round Torquay.

Thursday: Early morning swim, breakfast, then a long walk to the station to catch a very quick train to Exeter. We walk for miles round the city centre, dodging the occasional shower and enjoying the sunshine. The nicest area was the gardens round the cathedral. We found a little café where we enjoyed a coffee and hot baguette with pork, apple and stuffing filling. In the evening we watched the hotel cinema, which was showing the newest version of Pride & Prejudice.

Friday: After swim & breakfast we make our way to Paignton. A couple of long walks, a wander round the town centre all followed by a lovely picnic on the promenade overlooking Torbay. For the afternoon we visit the model village in Babbacombe. It is very detailed and well thought out with a few humerous touches. Then a walk round the picturesque village of St. Marychurch and Babbacombe. In the evening we return to the model village to view it with the lights on.

Saturday: The weather has taken a turn for the worse today so we grab our raincoats and drive to Teignmouth. We enjoy the sights and sounds of the town sandwiched between the English Channel and the River Teign. Then on to Dawlish where we walk up and down the stream which babbles over the weirs through the park in the town centre. Finally on to Newton Abbot, before returning to the hotel.

Sunday: Some rather inconsiderate (or stupid) people in room 19 were playing loud television until 1.00am and then again from 6.00am so we didn't get much sleep. Lousy weather but it didn't matter because we were travelling home. A smooth journey to Worcester where we stopped off for a break and a wander round the city centre. Once we reached the M6 the traffic slowed right down and must have added about an hour to our journey time. We arrived home mid-afternoon.
