Rhodes Holiday 2007

Saturday: Last minute packing and getting ready in the morning, then we set off for the airport. Plenty of waiting time, but the flight was only delayed by ½ hour. We finally got to our hotel room about 2.00am. Time for sleep.

Sunday: In the daylight we see that we have a lovely room with seaview (very close - we can hear the waves crashing). Excellent breakfast, then off to our welcome meeting with the rep. In the afternoon we wander in the warm sunshine, exploring first the new town, then the old town. A lovely evening meal followed by a walk to the old town, which had closed down by the time we got there.

Monday: Today we were a little slow to get started because of the early rain. Then lovely weather and we make the most of it, exploring the Old Town and taking in the history of the place, exploring the areas that we didn't see yesterday. We wandered round for hours.

Tuesday: Bad advice from our rep resulted in a bus tour taking in the towns of Kremasti and Maritses. Good value for money, but not exactly where we were aiming for (the town of Trianda).

Wednesday: Today we make an early start as we catch the boat to Lindos. Nice views on the way but the sea was a little too choppy for our comfort. Lindos was lovely with the quaint, whitewashed streets on the hillside with the Acropolis high above. Plenty of wandering around followed, and then a much more comfortable journey back on the boat.

Thursday: Another bus journey today, but this time a shorter one to Ixia. We wander round the shops and in one shop we are spoiled for choice with the oil paintings. We spent ages flicking through the canvasses, avoiding any that didn't look very Greek, while at the same time avoiding those which were stereotype Greek. We paid just over €15 for our choice. In the afternoon there was time for a swim and a lounge round the pool. In the evening another walk to the Old Town (it's not the sort of place that you tire of!).

Friday: Today's journey takes us to Ialyssos. We explore the touristy main street and beach road before walking into the traditional town centre. This made an interesting contrast to the other areas. The only bad-bit was the 1 hour wait for the bus, at a stop which said 'Every 15 minutes'. Later in the day we returned to Rhodes Old Town. The place is full of cats and dogs, some of which were quite entertaining. One looked a bit like Bagpus, and looked as though it was regularly beaten up by the other cats.

Saturday: Today we were due to sail to Marmaris for a day trip to Turkey. Unfortunately Thomas Cook cancelled at the very last minute, leaving a note telling us only last night! So it's back to Rhodes Old Town. We found some streets that we hadn't visited before, and it was a lovely, sunny end to our holiday. We set off for home just after 11:00pm and have a smoothe journey home. After putting our clocks back 3 hours, our arrival at home was about 4:30am.
